Training a Bearded Collie: what works and what to expect

Beardies are bright and willing, but they were bred to think independently, so they often consider a request before deciding whether to comply. Short, varied sessions with games and food rewards hold their interest, while repetitive drilling earns a comically slow response. A sense of humor helps the trainer as much as the dog.

Typical challenges include jumping up to greet people, barking when excited and a patchy recall when something better appears. Teach calm, four-paws-on-the-floor greetings early, reward quiet moments and practice recall around distractions on a long line. The herding drive can be channeled into treibball or herding instruction rather than the neighbors' children.
