Training a Beauceron: what works and what to expect

Beaucerons are intelligent and learn quickly, but they are not pushovers. They were bred to make independent decisions about a flock, and they respond best to calm, confident handlers who are fair and consistent. Harsh treatment damages trust, while inconsistency teaches the dog that it can take over.

Start socialization early and keep it going for 3 years: people of all ages, other dogs, livestock, traffic and visitors to the house. Teach impulse control and loose-lead walking while your puppy is still small, because a 40 kg adult that pulls or jumps is hard to handle. A training club or herding instructor who knows the breed is worth seeking out.
