Training a Rottweiler: what works and what to expect

Rottweilers learn fast and remember what they learn, good and bad. They respond best to calm, confident handlers who reward the right choice with food, play or praise and who never rely on force, which tends to make this breed either shut down or push back. Sessions of 10 to 15 minutes keep them engaged far better than long drills.

Socialization is the part that matters most. Between 8 and 16 weeks, aim to introduce your puppy to dozens of calm strangers, vaccinated dogs, traffic, children and different surfaces, and keep going through adolescence, when guarding behavior often emerges. A Rottweiler that has met hundreds of friendly people can tell a normal visitor from a real threat; one that has met very few cannot.
