Belgian Tervuren feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Belgian Tervuren.

Active adult Tervurens are lean dogs with quick metabolisms. A 25 kg dog doing daily runs and training may need roughly 330 to 420 g of standard dry food a day, about 3.25 to 4.25 cups, split into two meals. Dogs in heavy sport or herding work may need more or a higher-energy diet, while a retired senior may need around a quarter less.

Many Tervurens care more about working than eating, and some become picky, particularly adolescent males. Measure meals, lift any leftovers after 15 to 20 minutes, and avoid adding toppers that reward fussiness. Like other deep-chested breeds, they carry some risk of bloat, so keep hard exercise out of the hour either side of a meal. Feeding part of the daily ration during training uses up energy and calories at the same time.
