Training a Belgian Tervuren: what works and what to expect

Tervurens often pick up a new behavior after just a few repetitions, and they love structured work with a clear goal. Reward-based training with toys, tug and food suits them, with sessions kept short and varied so frustration does not build. Because they are sensitive, harsh corrections can make them anxious or cause them to shut down.

The usual challenges are herding behavior, reacting to fast movement, and nervousness around unfamiliar noises or people. Build impulse control early with games like waiting at doors and settling on a mat. Joining a sports class gives you both a goal, and many Tervurens go on to compete at a high level in obedience and agility.
