Puppies grow quickly in the first six months, and many reach adult height by about 12 months, but the chest, head and muscle continue to fill out until around 2 years, sometimes longer in heavier lines. Weight at eight weeks varies widely between varieties, so compare your puppy with its own parents rather than with charts.
Keep puppies lean and avoid pushing growth with extra calories. Excess weight on developing joints raises the risk of hip and elbow problems later. Limit stairs, jumping from furniture and forced running during the first year, and let play happen on grass or other forgiving surfaces.
