Training a Bichon Frise: what works and what to expect

Bichons like to please and respond well to cheerful, reward-based training. They get bored with drills, so mix new tricks into basic obedience and keep lessons to a few minutes. Many were bred from circus lines, and it shows in how quickly they learn to spin, wave or walk on their hind legs.

Housetraining can take several months, longer than with many breeds. A regular schedule, a crate or pen for unsupervised times, and a reward for every outdoor success usually get there. Also teach calm alone time early, because a Bichon that has never been left can become noisy and distressed when you go out.
