Training a Cairn Terrier: what works and what to expect

Cairns are bright problem solvers who learn fastest when they think the idea was theirs. Keep sessions short, around five to ten minutes, and use food or a quick tug game as the reward. Clicker training suits them well. Harsh corrections tend to create a standoff, and a Cairn is very good at standoffs.

The usual challenges are barking at the window, digging, and recall around squirrels or cats. Teach a 'quiet' cue by rewarding the pause after two or three barks, give digging a legal outlet, and practice recall in a fenced area with a long line before relying on it outdoors. Early, gentle introductions to cats help, but small pets such as rabbits and hamsters should stay safely out of reach.
