Brussels Griffon feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Brussels Griffon.
A 4.5 kg (10 lb) adult Griffon typically needs about 60 to 80 g of dry food per day, or a little under three quarters of a cup, split into two meals. Small breeds burn energy quickly for their size, so two regular meals are better than one. Treats add up fast at this size; ten small training treats can equal a tenth of the day's calories.
The short muzzle and undershot jaw mean some Griffons find deep bowls awkward. A shallow, wide dish lets the dog reach food without pushing its face into the sides, and small kibble is easier to pick up. Rough-coated dogs collect food and water in their beards, so a quick wipe after meals keeps the face clean and less smelly.
Some Griffons are fussy eaters and will hold out for something better. Offer the meal for 15 minutes, then pick it up until the next mealtime. Most learn quickly that food does not wait.
