Vizsla feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Vizsla.
Expect a working-fit adult of about 25 kg to eat 300 to 400 g of dry food daily, roughly 3 to 4 cups. Dogs in heavy training or the shooting season may need 20 to 30 percent more, while a neutered pet on shorter walks may need less. A lean body is normal for the breed: when your Vizsla stands, you should see a faint outline of the last couple of ribs.
Split food into two meals rather than one, and leave at least an hour between eating and a hard run. Deep-chested sporting dogs carry a recognized risk of bloat, and fast eaters swallow air along with their food. A slow-feeder bowl, or scattering kibble in a snuffle mat, slows a greedy dog down. If your Vizsla tries to vomit without bringing anything up and its belly looks swollen or tight, treat it as an emergency and go to a vet straight away.
