Norwegian Elkhound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Norwegian Elkhound.
A 23 kg (51 lb) adult Elkhound usually needs 230 to 300 g of dry food per day, around 2.5 to 3 cups, split into two meals. Elkhounds are thrifty eaters and put on weight quickly, especially if their exercise drops in winter or after neutering. Regular body checks are essential, as the thick coat hides extra weight.
Run your hands over the ribs every couple of weeks: you should feel them easily without pressing. If your dog is getting heavier, cut portions by around 10 percent and add some longer walks. Low-calorie training treats, or part of the daily kibble, are sensible for a breed that is so food-motivated.
A standard floor-level bowl suits most Elkhounds. Fast eaters may do better with a slow feeder or puzzle toy, which also gives an intelligent hunting dog something to work on.
