Most Cockers love food, and while working-line dogs burn through it, show-line dogs can put weight on quietly. A 14 kg (31 lb) adult with an hour of daily exercise often eats roughly 170 to 220 g of a typical dry food, about 2 to 2.5 cups, split into two meals. Neutered and older dogs frequently need 10 to 20 percent less than the bag suggests.
Mealtimes are a good moment to head off guarding. Feed your puppy somewhere quiet, walk past now and then and drop something tasty into the bowl so your approach predicts good things, and never snatch the bowl away to prove a point. A trained swap, where the dog gives up an item in exchange for a treat, is the easiest way to recover stolen goods without a standoff.
Those long ears tend to trail through food and water. A narrower, deeper bowl with sloping sides keeps the ear leather out of dinner, and raising the bowl a few centimeters can help too. Wipe the ear tips after meals so food does not dry into the feathering and attract mats.
