A practical grooming routine for the English Cocker Spaniel: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Plan on brushing two or three times a week with a slicker brush and a metal comb, working through the ears, armpits, chest feathering and the backs of the legs, where mats form first. Most pet owners have the coat trimmed every 6 to 10 weeks. Show dogs are hand-stripped on the back and tidied with thinning scissors; pet clipping is simpler and perfectly reasonable, though it can soften the texture over time.
Ears need weekly attention. Lift each flap, look for redness, heavy wax or a yeasty smell, and dry them well after swimming. Trim excess hair under the ear and between the foot pads, where grass seeds lodge in summer. If your dog shakes its head often, scratches at an ear or holds it at an odd angle, book a vet visit rather than trying a home remedy.
