How much exercise does a French Bulldog need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities a French Bulldog enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

Two or three outings of 15 to 20 minutes, about 40 to 60 minutes spread across the day, keep most adults fit and content. Frenchies enjoy sniffing routes, short games of fetch on grass, tug with a soft toy and food puzzles, all of which tire the brain without pushing the lungs. Long runs, cycling alongside you and summer hikes are not for this breed.

Heat changes everything. Above about 22°C (72°F), or on muggy days, walk only in the early morning or late evening and keep it brief. Loud rasping breaths, a wide flattened tongue, gums turning dark red or bluish and refusal to keep walking are signs to stop and get into shade; if breathing has not settled within a few minutes, or your dog collapses, call a vet on the way there.
