How much exercise does a Golden Retriever need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Golden Retriever enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
An adult Golden generally needs 60 to 90 minutes of activity a day, and at least part of it should involve the nose and mouth. Retrieving, swimming, scent games and carrying a canvas dummy on walks all tick the boxes the breed was built for. Water is the favorite for most: expect your dog to find every pond on the route and walk straight in.
Too little exercise shows up as chewing, stealing laundry, jumping on guests and mouthing hands. Too much, especially in young dogs, shows up as stiffness the next morning or a dog that lags behind on the way home. In summer, walk early or late, because that thick coat holds heat and a Golden will keep retrieving long after it should stop.
