How much exercise does a Great Dane need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Great Dane enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

Adult Danes have moderate needs: 45 to 75 minutes a day, split into two or three outings, is plenty for most. They enjoy steady walks, a short gallop in a secure field and exploring new smells more than long, repetitive running. Mental tasks such as searching for hidden treats or learning a new cue tire them out without pounding their joints.

Too little activity shows as restlessness, counter surfing and bored chewing, which at this size means real damage to doors and furniture. Too much shows as stiffness, slowing down on the way home or lying down mid-walk. Keep outings gentle on hot days, since a big body sheds heat slowly.
