Great Dane puppies grow at a startling rate. A pup of about 7 kg (15 lb) at 8 weeks can pass 40 kg (88 lb) by 6 months and still be far from finished. Most of the height arrives by 18 months, while chest, muscle and head keep filling in until 2 or even 3 years old.
The goal is slow, steady growth, not the biggest puppy on the street. Feed a diet made for giant-breed puppies with controlled calcium and phosphorus, do not add calcium on top, and keep your pup slightly lean with a visible waist. Skip forced running, jogging on hard ground and jumps from height until growth plates close. Knuckling over at the wrists, sudden lameness, swollen joints or crying when getting up all mean a vet visit that same week.
