Havanese feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Havanese.
An adult Havanese of about 4.5 kg (10 lb) usually eats 75 to 90 g of dry food a day, which is about three quarters of a cup, split into two meals. Some are fussy eaters who hold out for something better. Resist topping the bowl with extras every time, because a dog that learns this trick can become harder to feed, not easier.
Long ear feathering and a full beard end up in the bowl at every meal. A bowl with a narrower opening helps the ears fall outside it, and some owners clip the ear hair back with a soft band during meals. Wiping the mouth afterwards cuts down on the reddish staining that food and saliva leave on pale coats.
Havanese are not usually greedy, but a slow weight gain is easy to miss under all that hair. Run your hands along the ribs every couple of weeks: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of padding. If you cannot, reduce the daily portion by about 10 percent and check again in a month.
