Training a Jack Russell Terrier: what works and what to expect

Jack Russells learn quickly; the challenge is that they also decide quickly whether a task is worth doing. High-value food, games of tug and fast sessions of 5 minutes or less keep them engaged. Make training feel like hunting: hide a toy and send the dog to find it, reward a fast recall with a chase game, and turn loose-lead walking into a chance to sniff.

Common struggles include recall around wildlife, barking at the window and guarding toys. Start recall on a long line in a quiet field and add distractions gradually. Teach a 'leave it' cue with food on the floor long before you meet your first squirrel. Socialize with calm adult dogs from puppyhood, and supervise play with other terriers, since squabbles can escalate fast.
