Jack Russell Terrier grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Jack Russell Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
All three coat types shed, and white hair shows on everything you own. Smooth coats need a weekly rub with a rubber mitt. Broken and rough coats benefit from hand-stripping two or three times a year, where dead hair is plucked out by hand or with a stripping knife, keeping the jacket harsh and weatherproof. Clipping a rough coat softens the texture and can dull the color over time.
Bathe only after a muddy dig or a roll in something foul, since the coat sheds dirt once it dries. Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks, brush teeth several times a week because small dogs build tartar quickly, and check between the toes after walks in long grass, where seeds can lodge and work their way in.
