Jack Russell Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Jack Russell Terrier.
A 6 kg (13 lb) adult typically eats around 90 to 120 g of dry food a day, roughly 1 to 1.25 cups, split into two meals. Very active working terriers need more; a dog that mostly lounges on the sofa needs less. Because this breed learns so well with food, set aside part of the daily ration for training rather than adding extra treats on top.
Jack Russells are rarely fussy, but some become possessive over food and chews. Feed in a quiet spot away from other pets and practice trading games early: offer a better treat, take the item, then give it back. A small, heavy ceramic or steel bowl suits them better than a light plastic one, which soon becomes a toy to shove across the kitchen.
