Kuvasz feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Kuvasz.
Despite their size, many guardian breeds have fairly moderate appetites, a legacy of dogs that spent long hours lying calmly among the flock. A 45 kg adult with moderate activity might need around 1,700 to 2,000 kcal a day, often 450 to 550 g of a typical large-breed dry food (roughly 4.5 to 5.5 cups). Adjust according to body shape rather than the bag's chart, and use your hands to feel for ribs beneath the thick coat.
Split food into at least two meals and keep vigorous play or running away from mealtimes by about an hour on either side. Like other large, deep-chested breeds, the Kuvasz can be at risk of bloat. Research on raised bowls and bloat is mixed, so choose a bowl height that lets your dog eat in a relaxed, natural posture and ask your vet if you have concerns.
Puppies need a food formulated for large or giant breeds, which limits calcium and energy density so bones grow at a steady pace rather than in spurts.

|---|---|---|---|
| Female, relaxed lifestyle | 44 kg | 1660 kcal | 450 g (4.5 cups) |
| Female, typical pet | 44 kg | 1900 kcal | 515 g (5.3 cups) |
| Male, typical pet | 55 kg | 2260 kcal | 610 g (6 cups) |
| Male, very active | 55 kg | 2830 kcal | 765 g (7.8 cups) |
Puppy portions need measured weight, growth stage and the food’s energy content. A breed-average curve is not a feeding plan. Calculate with measured inputs and review the result with your vet.
