Most reach full height by 12 months, then spend another 6 to 12 months filling out through the chest and shoulders. A food formulated for large-breed puppies controls calcium and energy so the skeleton develops at a steady pace rather than in spurts.
Keep your puppy lean during this stage, since extra weight on growing joints is one of the few hip and elbow risk factors you control directly. Short play sessions on grass beat long runs on pavement, and repeated leaps out of the car or down a full flight of stairs are best avoided until growth plates close at around 12 to 18 months.
