Brush once or twice a week with a slicker brush and a comb, focusing on feathering behind the ears, the armpits, the chest and the trousers, where tangles form first. Shedding is moderate year-round with heavier seasonal molts. Trim hair between the paw pads and around the feet to reduce mud and ice balls in winter.
After walks in fields or woods, check the coat, ears and feet for burrs, ticks and grass seeds. Long ears need weekly cleaning and a check after swimming. Bathe only when needed, as the coat's natural oils help it shed water. Nails usually need trimming every three to four weeks unless the dog runs regularly on hard ground.
