How much exercise does a Miniature American Shepherd need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Miniature American Shepherd enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Allow 60 to 90 minutes of exercise a day for an adult, split between walks, free running and some form of brain work. The breed thrives in agility, rally obedience, herding instinct trials, nose work and trick training. Many owners find that 20 minutes of scent games in the house tires the dog as much as a long walk.
Signs of too little: nuisance barking, spinning, stalking the cat, chewing, and an inability to settle in the evening. Signs of too much, or of the wrong kind: stiffness the next morning, reluctance to jump into the car, or a dog that seems tense and wired rather than relaxed after exercise. Endless ball throwing tends to wind these dogs up, while structured games with rules calm them down.
