Most adults do well on about 150 to 250 g of dry food daily, around 1.5 to 2.5 cups, depending on size and activity. A 10 kg female who walks an hour a day sits at the lower end, while a 17 kg male doing agility several times a week may need the top of that range. Weigh the dog monthly during its first year of adulthood so you spot any drift early.
Many owners assume a smaller dog needs only a tiny portion, and this breed is excellent at looking hungry, so treats are the usual cause of weight gain. Count training rewards as part of the day's food. Pea-sized pieces are plenty, and setting aside a portion of the kibble each morning for training keeps the total honest. A slim Miniature American Shepherd should show a visible tuck behind the ribs.
Two meals a day work well. A bowl sized for a medium dog is fine, and a shallow, wide dish or a slow feeder helps if yours eats in a frantic rush after exercise. Give the dog 30 to 60 minutes to settle after hard play before serving a full meal.
