Boerboel feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Boerboel.
An adult Boerboel usually eats somewhere around 700 g to 1 kg of dry food a day, about 7 to 10 cups, depending on size, activity and the food's energy content. Split it into two or three meals to reduce the risk of bloat, a known danger for large, deep-chested breeds. Many adults are very food motivated, so weigh portions and keep an eye on the waistline.
Some Boerboels guard food, bones and bowls, which is dangerous in a dog this strong. Build calm behavior around food from the first day: walk past the bowl and drop in something tastier, rather than taking things away. Feed in a quiet area away from other pets, use a heavy stainless steel bowl, and allow a rest period after meals before rough play.
