Training a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever: what works and what to expect

Tollers learn quickly and are motivated by food and by anything involving a retrieve. They lose interest with repetition, so keep sessions short and mix skills. Many excel in obedience, rally and field trials, and they often enjoy trick training for its variety.

The Toller scream is the most discussed challenge: an ear-splitting shriek when excited, often right before a walk or a thrown toy. Rewarding calm, keeping arrivals and departures low key, and asking for a sit before throwing anything all help. Early socialization reduces shyness with strangers, and recall needs deliberate practice around ducks, geese and other wildlife.
