Training an English Bulldog: what works and what to expect

Bulldogs learn perfectly well, but they weigh every request against the effort involved. Repetitive drills bore them, and pulling on a Bulldog that has decided to sit in the middle of the pavement rarely works. Five-minute sessions, food rewards and a cheerful tone get much further than firmness. Teaching a reliable recall and loose-lead walking early saves years of trying to shift 23 kg of dog that has planted its feet.

House training can take a little longer than with some breeds, so keep a regular schedule and reward outdoor toileting generously. A few individuals guard food or toys; practice swap games from puppyhood, trading the item for something better and then handing it back. Plenty of calm contact with friendly adult dogs during the first months reduces bossiness with other males later.
