Training an Ibizan Hound: what works and what to expect

Ibizans learn quickly, but they were bred to hunt at a distance from people, making their own calls. Treat training as a conversation: three or four repetitions of a cue, a great reward, then a change of activity. Ask for the same sit ten times and many will wander off to lie on the sofa. Soft food rewards and a chance to chase a toy are usually the strongest motivators.

Recall and prey drive are the biggest challenges. Start recall training early, using a long line and high-value rewards, and practice in different environments. Teach a solid wait at doors and gates. Early socialization with other pets is important, but many Ibizans will always chase small animals.
