Training a Field Spaniel: what works and what to expect

Field Spaniels are willing learners but noticeably sensitive. A raised voice or a heavy hand can shut them down for the rest of a session, while gentle praise and food bring out their best. Keep sessions short and positive and expect progress to be steady rather than fast.

Recall around scent is the main challenge, since a nose-down Field can tune you out entirely. Train a whistle recall early and practice it with high-value rewards in gradually more exciting places. Some Fields are shy as youngsters, so build confidence with calm socialization rather than busy, overwhelming outings.
