Training a Yorkshire Terrier: what works and what to expect

How the Yorkshire Terrier learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Yorkies learn quickly when there is a reward in it for them, and they lose interest fast when there is not. Keep sessions to five minutes, use tiny treats and end while the dog is still keen. Tricks such as spin, wave and go to bed are a good outlet for a busy mind, and they build a habit of listening.

House training is the usual sticking point. A small bladder and a dislike of wet grass mean accidents can last for months. Take the puppy out after every meal, nap and play session, praise success heavily and consider a crate for short periods. Teach a quiet cue early too, because a Yorkie that is allowed to bark at every noise will happily do it all day.
