Polish Lowland Sheepdog health: what owners should know

The breed is generally sturdy, but it is known to be predisposed to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and hypothyroidism. A rare inherited neurological disease, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, has also been reported in PONs. Responsible breeders score hips, have eyes examined regularly and use the DNA tests available for the breed.

Grooming sessions are a good moment to check the skin for hot spots and lumps that the coat would otherwise hide. Keep weight in check and schedule a yearly vet visit. Contact a vet if your dog starts bumping into things at night, gains weight while becoming tired and losing coat, or shows new confusion, clumsiness or changes in behavior.
