Training a Portuguese Podengo: what works and what to expect

Podengos are intelligent, independent and quick to learn when training is fun. They were bred to hunt with little human direction, so they respond best to short sessions, high-value food rewards and plenty of variety. Clicker training and trick work suit them well, while repetitive drills or harsh handling produce a switched-off, avoidant dog.

Typical challenges are recall around prey, alert barking and escape artistry. Build recall with games from day one and practice on a long line. Reward calm, quiet behavior at windows and fences. Early, positive socialization with strangers helps prevent over-caution with visitors. Because they are clever, many Podengos learn to open cupboards and gates, so childproof latches are useful.
