Portuguese Podengo feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Portuguese Podengo.
Food needs vary widely with size. A 5 kg Pequeno usually eats about 70 to 90 g of dry food a day, roughly three-quarters of a cup, while an 18 kg Médio needs around 220 to 280 g, about 2.25 to 2.75 cups. A Grande of 25 kg may eat 300 to 350 g. Split the ration into two meals and adjust to keep your dog lean, with ribs easily felt and a visible waist.
Podengos are usually good eaters without being greedy, and most keep a racy, athletic outline naturally. The Pequeno is the exception to watch: because its daily ration is so small, a handful of treats can tip it into weight gain within weeks. Wire-coated dogs have beards that trap food, so a shallow bowl and a quick wipe after meals help. Keep water available at all times, particularly after energetic hunting games.
