Training a Plott Hound: what works and what to expect

Plotts are smart and willing, but the nose is always in the conversation. Training works best with food rewards and plenty of repetition in low-distraction settings before moving outdoors. Teach a strong leave-it cue and practice recall on a long line for months.

Baying is natural and hard to switch off completely. You can reduce nuisance noise by meeting exercise needs, not leaving the dog alone in the garden for long, and rewarding quiet. Crate training and a predictable routine help a Plott settle indoors, and many do better with another dog for company.
