Portuguese Podengo grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Portuguese Podengo: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Both coats are easy. The smooth coat needs a rubber mitt once a week; the wire coat benefits from a comb through the beard and a quick brush once or twice a week. Neither coat is trimmed or stripped for pet life, and the wire coat should look natural and slightly scruffy. Shedding is light, with a modest seasonal increase.
Bathe only when dirty, perhaps every two to three months. Trim nails every two to three weeks, especially in dogs that walk mostly on grass. The large upright ears are open and airy, which reduces ear problems, but check them after walks through long grass for seeds. In Pequenos, brush the teeth several times a week to limit dental disease.
