Pug grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding

A practical grooming routine for the Pug: coat care, baths, nails and ears.

Brush two or three times a week with a rubber brush or grooming mitt, and daily during spring and autumn sheds. Pugs drop a surprising amount of hair, and fawn dogs tend to shed more than black ones. A bath every four to six weeks with a mild dog shampoo keeps the coat fresh.

The nose fold needs daily attention. Gently wipe inside it with a soft, damp cloth, then dry it completely, as moisture trapped there can lead to irritation. Check the eyes each day for redness, squinting or cloudiness. Trim nails every three weeks, because Pugs do little to wear them down on soft ground.
