Pumi feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Pumi.
An active 12 kg (26 lb) adult typically needs about 170 to 220 g of dry food daily, roughly 2 to 2.5 cups, divided into two meals. Dogs doing regular agility or farm work may need more, while a Pumi in a calmer stretch of life needs less. Adjust by body condition, aiming for a clearly defined waist when you look down from above.
Because they are so food motivated, many owners set aside part of the daily ration for training. Weigh the day's kibble in the morning, move a third of it into a treat pouch, and feed the rest at mealtimes. This keeps rewards from quietly adding 10 percent or more to daily calories.
Pumik tend to eat quickly and then look for the next task. A slow feeder, snuffle mat or food puzzle stretches a meal from one minute to ten and doubles as a small mental workout, which suits this breed perfectly on rainy days.
