Spanish Water Dogs learn fast and like having a purpose. Reward-based training with food, toys and play works best, and sessions of 10 to 15 minutes keep them sharp. They are sensitive to harsh corrections and may shut down or turn defensive if handled roughly.
Early and ongoing socialization is essential. Introduce your puppy to many friendly strangers, children, sounds and places, and keep it up through adolescence. The herding instinct can include nipping, so teach an alternative behavior early. Calm door greetings deserve practice too, because the breed is a vigilant watchdog.
