Training a Welsh Terrier: what works and what to expect

Welsh Terriers are smart and learn quickly but often ask why. They respond best to reward-based methods and short, fun sessions. Repetitive drills bore them, and harsh methods tend to produce stubbornness rather than obedience.

Common challenges include recall, digging, chasing and tension with other dogs. Start socialization early, especially with other dogs, and teach impulse control exercises such as 'wait' and 'leave it'. Give the digging instinct a legal outlet, such as a sandpit, and use puzzle toys to channel curiosity. Clear, consistent rules help them understand what is expected.
