Sheltie puppies grow quickly for the first six months and are close to adult height by 9 to 10 months. The coat keeps developing much longer: the full adult mane and frill often take until 2 or 3 years of age, and an adolescent Sheltie can look lanky and thin-coated somewhere between 8 and 12 months. That awkward stage is normal.
Ear carriage changes during teething too. The ideal Sheltie ear tips forward at the top, and some puppies' ears stand fully erect for a while. Breeders sometimes weight or glue ears during this stage for the show ring, which is a cosmetic choice rather than a health one. Keep growing puppies lean and ask your vet if you notice bowed legs or lameness.
