How much exercise does a Shetland Sheepdog need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Shetland Sheepdog enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

About 60 minutes a day of combined walking and play suits most adults, though sport-bred Shelties will happily do more. They excel at agility, where their speed and tight turning make them regular winners in the small-height classes, and they enjoy herding lessons, obedience, rally and trick training. Mental work tires them as effectively as physical work.

A bored Sheltie usually tells you so by barking, spinning, or trying to herd the children and the cat. The herding instinct also makes moving things tempting, so keep them leashed near roads, since many will chase cars and bikes. They overheat faster than you might expect under that coat, so skip midday outings in warm weather.
