An 18 kg (40 lb) Standard Schnauzer with daily walks typically eats about 220 to 280 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 2.25 to 3 cups, over two meals. They are keen eaters and tend to gain weight when bored, so keep portions measured and treats modest.
Miniature Schnauzers are well known for trouble with fatty food, and many Standard owners take the same care. Keep table scraps, sausages and rich treats off the menu, and change foods gradually over about a week.
The beard is the practical issue at mealtimes. It soaks up water, holds crumbs and drips across the kitchen floor. A narrower, deeper bowl limits how much of the beard dips in, and wiping the face after meals prevents staining and smell. Stainless steel bowls are easy to sanitize and do not hold bacteria in scratches the way worn plastic can.
