Training a Toy Poodle: what works and what to expect

Toy Poodles pick things up in very few repetitions, including lessons you never meant to give. If lifting the dog up ends the barking, the dog soon learns that barking gets it lifted. Keep sessions to 5 to 10 minutes, use tiny food rewards or a favorite toy, and stop while the dog is still keen.

Housetraining is the most common sticking point, mainly because a small puddle behind a chair goes unnoticed for days. Take your puppy out after every meal, nap and play session, and use a pen or crate when you cannot supervise. Build alone time gradually from the first week, starting with two or three minutes behind a baby gate while you stay in the next room.
