Training a Vizsla: what works and what to expect

Vizslas are keen, clever and very aware of your tone of voice. A raised voice can dent a young dog's confidence for days. Reward-based training with food, toys and the chance to run works beautifully, and the breed shines in obedience, agility and field trials when trained this way.

Recall deserves early, constant attention, because a pheasant or hare will test it. A 10 to 15 m long line lets you practice safely in open fields. Teaching an off switch matters just as much: short periods of settling on a mat after exercise help a Vizsla learn to relax at home instead of shadowing you all evening.
