Field Spaniel feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Field Spaniel.
Field Spaniels are hearty eaters, and many will finish anything left within reach. A 20 kg (44 lb) adult with a normal amount of exercise typically needs about 250 to 320 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 2.5 to 3.25 cups, split into two meals. Judge by feel, since the feathering hides a thickening waist.
Those long ears are the practical problem at mealtimes. They fall into bowls, pick up food and water and can stay damp for hours. A narrow, deep bowl with sloping sides keeps most of the ear outside, and a snood (a soft fabric tube worn over the head) is handy for messy eaters.
If your Field gobbles its meals, a slow feeder or scattering the kibble across the lawn gives its nose a job and slows things down. Count training treats as part of the day's allowance, especially if you do a lot of gundog work.
