Kooikerhondje feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Kooikerhondje.
A 10 kg (22 lb) adult generally eats 140 to 170 g of dry food a day, roughly 1.5 cups, split into two meals. Most Kooikers are not greedy, and some are picky, particularly when excited or stressed by changes at home.
Keep feeding times and places consistent; a sensitive dog eats more reliably in a quiet corner away from household traffic. A stable, non-slip bowl helps, since some dogs startle if a bowl slides or clatters. Adjust portions if you can no longer feel the ribs easily or if the waist disappears.
Kooikers that swim often or train for agility through the colder months burn more energy, and a modest increase of 10 to 15 percent usually covers it. For training, soft treats cut to pea size work better than crunchy biscuits, since a sensitive dog that has to chew and hunt for crumbs loses focus. Count those treats as part of the day's food.
