How much exercise does an Akita need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an Akita enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Around 60 minutes a day suits most adults: a couple of brisk walks plus some time in a secure area. Akitas are not hyperactive, but they have stamina and enjoy hiking, especially in cold weather, when many come alive and want to play in snow. Scent games, tracking and weight pulling are good outlets for their strength and brains.
Their prey drive makes off-lead walks in open country risky, since a running deer or cat can override any recall. Use a long line in unfenced places. In warm weather they overheat easily, so walk in the cooler hours and watch for heavy panting, slowing down or seeking shade.
