Akita grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Akita: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Weekly brushing with a slicker brush and an undercoat rake keeps the coat in good condition for most of the year. Twice a year the Akita blows its undercoat, dropping it in clumps over two to three weeks, and daily raking plus a warm bath and a high-velocity dryer (if your dog accepts it) speed things up. First-time owners are often shocked by the volume.
Akitas keep themselves clean and have little doggy odor, so baths every two to three months are plenty. Trim nails every three to four weeks and check the ears weekly. Never shave the coat, which protects against both cold and sun.
